Da Beatminerz

Da Beatminerz are a Bushwick, Brooklyn-based hip hop production crew. They’re recognized for their dark, gritty sound, which has gained a lot of traction in the East Coast underground hip hop scene. Mr. Walt and DJ Evil Dee founded the crew in 1992, and they made their production debut with Evil Dee’s outfit Black Moon on their hit “Who Got da Props?” The entire album was created by the two of them. The five members of the collective, lead by DJ Evil Dee and Mr. Walt, each developed their beat-making skills before coming together and creating the collective’s signature “boom bap” sound, which emphasizes the bottom end, bass lines, strong kicks, and snares. The popularity of Black Moon led to the foundation of da Beatminerz around the same time as Smif-N-Dah Wessun’s Shinin’ album, which featured the group’s production work. Then there were productions for rappers like Rah Digga, Mark Morrison, the Roots, and Eminem, to name a few. Rawkus came calling soon after and invited the band to record a debut album. Busta Rhymes, Pete Rock, Naughty By Nature, Talib Kweli, Total, and Cocoa Brovaz were among the guest rappers on the resulting album.
